Mendocino Stories & Music Series on April 27
Mendocino Stories and Music Series presents LoCo Choro on Friday, April 27 at the Mendocino Hotel. Born of a mutual love for the infectious syncopations and timeless melodies of Brazilian Choro music, the band includes Chad Swimmer, Booie Volk, Andrea Shafir and Myra Joy. The music will start at 7:30PM.
Choro originated in the late 19th century in Rio De Janeiro from roots in American ragtime, Cuban habanera and European polkas, waltzes, and mazurkas, but really came into its own when set to the African poly rhythms percolating in the multi-cultural stew of the New World.
With samba and bossa nova rhythms, it is now experiencing a resurgence throughout Brazil, California, and even in other far-flung points on the globe. It feels classical, with evocative and powerful melodies, multiple key changes, and complicated chord progressions.
LoCo Choro plays an eclectic mix of Brazilian and other music in an acoustic, almost chamber style, with cello, mandolin, and cuatro backed by percussion to offer an irresistible mélange. Our members bring a diverse background to our interpretations of choro classics.
